jnc 8 hypertension guidelines 2023
Release time :Nov-28,2024
As per the 2023 update of the JNC 8 Hypertension Guidelines, the criteria for diagnosing hypertension remain consistent, defining it as sustained or three separate measurements on different days with a systolic blood pressure of ≥140 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 mmHg in adults. Lifestyle interventions recommended for hypertensive patients include weight reduction, increased physical activity, sodium restriction, potassium supplementation, alcohol limitation, and adherence to a diet rich in vegetables and fruits.
Pharmacological treatment recommendations suggest initiating therapy with thiazide diuretics, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, or ARBs. For individuals over 60 years of age or those with diabetes, the initial treatment goal is to achieve a blood pressure below 150/90 mmHg; however, if a lower target is well-tolerated, it can be further reduced to below 140/90 mmHg. The guidelines also underscore the significance of regular follow-ups and blood pressure monitoring for individuals with hypertension.
For patients with hypertension, alongside pharmacological treatment, lifestyle modifications are crucial. It is advised to maintain a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, abstain from smoking, and moderate alcohol intake. Regular blood pressure monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans under a physician's supervision are essential. Always remember that medication should be taken under a doctor's guidance and never self-administered blindly.
