There is a recognized association between pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and obesity. Typically, obesity can elevate the risk of developing PAH due to the increased strain it places on the heart, which in turn affects the pressure within the pulmonary vasculature.

To elaborate, the adipose tissue in individuals with obesity releases inflammatory cytokines that may induce constriction and sclerosis of the pulmonary vessels, leading to increased pulmonary arterial pressure. Furthermore, obesity is also a contributing factor to the development of sleep apnea syndrome, which similarly can raise pulmonary arterial pressure. Consequently, it is crucial for obese individuals to manage their weight and adopt healthier lifestyle practices to not only mitigate the risk of PAH but also to enhance their overall health.

For patients who have been diagnosed with PAH, in addition to pursuing active treatment, they should also focus on lifestyle adjustments such as maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and abstaining from smoking and limiting alcohol intake. Regular follow-ups and adherence to medical advice are equally critical. Should there be any changes in their condition, they should seek medical care promptly.
